ILIAS: Worldwide Support, for over 20 years
ILIAS, acronym for Integriertes Lern-, Informations- und Arbeitskooperations-System (translation: ‘Integrated Learning, Information, and Work Cooperation System’), is a web-based learning management system. As a big player in the LMS game, it carries SCORM 2004 compliance, years of support and stability, and a flexible, open-source system that can be customized for most educational or training needs.
Since 1998, ILIAS has been used on a university level to teach a variety of subjects. As of 2000, it is a free, open-source software that meets web-based content management needs, while offering a flexible, easily customizable system for assessing, communicating with, and cooperating among users.
Learning Content Management
The system used to communicate information using ILIAS can be likened to a study desk and a bookshelf of information. The desk, or Personal Desktop, is the workspace for an individual user. From it, the user can retrieve content from the bookshelf (such as coursework, exercises, or a group forum), as well as access tools and utilities, like a calendar, personal notes, or mail systems.
The bookshelf, or Repository, is the home for all learning content. It contains all course material, as well as any additional instructor-provided tools. Exercises, tests, forums, and surveys, along with a multitude of externally created applications are all content that an instructor can optionally provide. All content access is granted by a system called role-based access control, which allows for controlled distribution; students can access course material and exercises, while instructors and their assistants could be granted permission to access answer keys, as an example. Access to material can be granted on a timer, course news and announcements can be distributed easily, and material can be managed on the fly.
Communication, Evaluation, and Assessment
In addition to providing content to its users, ILIAS facilitates an intuitive system for a variety of communication styles. For an instructor, it is easy to provide coursework assessments spanning multiple choice and matching questions, fill-in-the-blank, mathematical, and essay problems.
The same format can be used to provide online exams, with both tests and exercises providing built-in support for question and randomization, as well as question pools to re-use questions for exams and follow-up assessment.
For students, ILIAS provides an internal messaging system for virtual classrooms, as well as optional forums and instant messaging applications. Instructors can provide surveys and their students can use them to give feedback on what kinds of material is most effective. Using even some of the many features from the full suite of communication facilitates an interactive and custom-built learning environment.
Comparing ILIAS to other LMS's
Choosing an LMS can be difficult, especially with the ever-growing world of open source options. However, ILIAS is among the top choices consistently, and has been for many years—this is in large part due to its nearly two decades of use, spread across the globe and used in environments ranging from business training to university-level education.
With its pedigree, ILIAS has established a strong, supportive community. Every year, its
users hold a conference to address issues and features that need or deserve attention.
Bugs in the software are communally squashed and security exploits are dealt with
swiftly. It was one of the first systems to support SCORM, and is presently compatible
with the most recent version
In fact, the system is security-certified by NATO, and is used in NATO’s high-security intranet. Several countries, such as Belgium and Chile, use ILIAS for management, intercommunication, and training. Few LMS have the staying power or promise of security that comes with ILIAS.
External plugins that enhance the capabilities of virtual classrooms and networks are well-supported. Audio and video conference calls, whiteboard functionality, desktop sharing, and mobile access are all provided through the use of third-party applications. With its long history of community and expansion, ILIAS is sure to have something to suit most any application—and if it doesn’t right now, it can easily be modified and customized to do so
Our Services
At ILIAS Rooms, we offer two primary services. If you already have content that you’re seeking to place online and provide service to users, we’re here to provide three tiers of service based on your needs. Whether you’re serving your information to a dozen viewers or a thousand, we have a hosting and maintenance package to match.
Additionally, should you need additional assistance, LMS content crafted to fit course or training material, or content migrated to ILIAS from another LMS service, we have an experienced team ready to assist. We’re here to make things easy, and provide the service to meet your LMS needs.
Setup, Hosting and Maintenance
ILIAS Rooms’ primary focus is on getting your content online and making sure it’s safe there. We are here to help set up the servers, host them in our SoftLayer cloud storage, and maintain them for as long as you want them online.
Installing the tools needed to run ILIAS servers can be complex. Setting up an Apache web server, configuring a MySQL database, and the many third-party tools like Zlib, ImageMagick, and a sendmail daemon can be a real challenge without significant experience in the web world. We’ve been running Apache servers for more than fifteen years, and we have the experience with taking servers online that only comes with time and practice.
We use a SoftLayer Data Center based in Dallas, TX for hosting, and extend that to hosting our clientele’s servers. With that comes best-in-class support and security, including dedicated generators, battery backups, and industry-leading hardware to keep reliability and performance strong, 24/7. Regular and by-need server maintenance is also provided to clients, free-of-charge. We’re here to put you online and make sure you stay there, hassle-free
Consulting
If you need assistance beyond the initial installation and long-term hosting/support, ILIAS Rooms is happy to offer additional assistance. Whether it’s for general consulting, or more directed applications like content creation or migration from another LMS, we’re here to meet your needs.
Our parent company, Beardon Services, has been in the consulting business for many years. We know how to provide guidance and custom solutions to our clients, and take, pride in making sure they feel confident and secure. Whether it’s an over-the-phone walkthrough on setting up a class, or a face-to-face meetup to demonstrate how a feature works, we’re here to provide assistance.
ILIAS Rooms is not Beardon’s first foray into the e-learning world, either. Our team has seen several LMS projects, including both ILIAS and Moodle, and even produced a custom, SCORM-compliant Moodle course at the university level. If you need help with creating new digital content to match a traditional information source, such as a textbook or training manual, or if you would like assistance migrating pre-existing coursework to ILIAS from another LMS, ILIAS Rooms is happy to help.
What ILIAS Rooms Offers
There are a lot of hosting services out there, but not many have the backing of companies with the expertise and skillset like ours. ILIAS Rooms and its parent company, Beardon Services, have the level of experience that comes with nearly thirty years of information technology work—much of it in e-learning environments like ILIAS.
Below you can find a little more information about our organization’s past projects, as well as a short breakdown of our pricing scale, offered in three tiers to suit your needs. Our prices are competitive, and we offer a trial server with limited access for interested parties to test out their ILIAS server before committing to a purchase.
Experience
ILIAS Rooms is a subset of Beardon Services, a software consulting and web development firm based in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Since 1989, Beardon’s workers have been providing software solutions to companies all over the nation. In the past, Beardon has hosted ILIAS servers for Oklahoma State University’s Fire Protection Publications (FPP) department, built directly for them.
One of the projects we are supremely proud of is an e-learning module for FPP, designed to cover the full content of the Essentials of Firefighting text used in university coursework. This module was designed to be SCORM-compliant and is currently for sale through FPP. Beardon, and by extension ILIAS Rooms, has a strong background in e-learning and LMS’s
FPP is the world’s leading publisher for fire and emergency related training materials, and we have been their primary source of technical support and consulting since 1988. With Essentials, we’re proud to add e-learning to our list of services provided. In the future, we hope to bring online curriculum and training to more businesses and schools —and we would be happy to put our expertise and services to work for you.
